Slayer Stays Brutal; Issues Update On Album

Tom Araya and Kerry King of Slayer spoke to ShockHound about their new "brutal" album. I'm sure that's the understatement of the year.

This will be the band's 10th studio album, which is still unnamed. The record is the second for Slayer since the original line up reunited in 2001. Rick Rubin is on board as the executive producer, who was also present for Reign in Blood in 1986. A few working titles for tracks include:

"Build Up"
"7 String"
"Drop B"
"Psychopathy Red"

I Wasn't There That Sunday, But These Guys Took It Back

New Queen To Join Queen?

In an interview with Rolling Stone magazine last week, Queen's guitarist Brian May told the Stone that the band is considering replacing the recently opened spot for vocalist of the band with second place winner of American Idol Adam Lambert.

Says May: "…[Drummer Roger Taylor] and I are definitely hoping to have a meaningful conversation with [Lambert] at some point. It's not like we, as Queen, would rush into coalescing with another singer just like that. It isn't that easy. But I'd certainly like to work with Adam. That is one amazing instrument he has there."

Queen's frontman position was made available in May when Paul Rodgers announced that the partnership had ended, as it was never meant to be permanent.

Fun Fact: Adam Lambert performed "Bohemian Rhapsody" during is initial American Idol audition.

In addition to his vocal talent, Lambert seems to have the Freddy Mercury look down as well.

Update on the Crack The Skye Film

Metal Injection managed to snag an interview with Brann Dailor of Mastodon before their set in Brooklyn, NY earlier this week, and this is what he had to say about the possibility of making a film of their latest explosive album Crack The Skye:

Metal Injection: What kind of vibe are you going for with [the Crack the Skye movie]? Is it like "The Wall" or the KISS movie?

Brann Dailor: No, not the KISS movie, although that's a great movie.

Metal Injection: Would there be dialog in the movie or is just the music with visuals?

Brann Dailor: I don't know yet. The first thought that we had for it was just the music and a movie to go along with it. That's what the treatment is for. But we talked to some directors and they're kind of into possibly introducing some dialogue so it's a little more cohesive and makes more sense and making it like "The Wall" or something like that. But, it's kind of at a stand still right now. We don't know if it's going to happen, but we want it to happen. I guess we'll see.

Troy Sanders: We're definitely trying everything we can to make this Crack the Skye film, but it's quite involved. You need financial backing, a director on board…but we're working as hard we possibly can and we would like for it to be born.

Brann Dailor: You need assistant directors standing around being like 'Hey, hey, hey, move back. Step back five feet, we're filming a movie here!'

Metal Injection: That guy needs to get paid!

Brann Dailor: Yep.

Troy Sanders: We're eternally searching for the proper catering too.

Loaded Performs "No Shame" Live For The First Time

Duff McKagan's Loaded performs their single "No Shame" off their album Sick for the first time live in the Blender Theater in NYC May 19, 2009.

Slash Gets Animated

Slash might get the chance to be immortalized as a cartoon in addition to his Guitar Hero character. According to his Twitter, he is pitching a cartoon to Comedy Central. Around 1 p/m/ DST the post said:

"Pitching a cartoon to Comedy Central today with Mike Sculley of "Simpsons" fame. #fb"

Wonder what it could be about?

GNR Reunion Tonight?

According to Bumblefoot (aka RonThal)'s Twitter, he plans to attend the Loaded performance tonight in NYC. The post on the social messaging site read:

"Duff McKagan's LOADED 8pm Tue May 19 2009 Blender Theater 127 E23 St NYC. (I'll be there, maybe with guitar in hand for a song or two....?)"

Bumblefoot is the current guitarist for Guns 'N Roses.

Although there is no word from Slash, he is definitely in town and I would like to think he would make an appearance tonight.

So let's think about this: Duff McKagan used to play drums back in the day with The Fartz and The Fastbacks, Slash plays a mean guitar like nobody's business, and Bumblefoot can play bass. Put those three together and you kinda play some Guns 'N Roses, but who would be on vocals?

I know, it's never going to happen, but I'm a huge fan of GNR and I can dream, right?

Show Review: Loaded

One of my favorite gems from the Northwest rock scene, Duff McKagan, performed with his band Loaded at Vintage Vinyl Records in Fords, NJ today and rocked these Jersey folk like only a gang of Seattleites could. I ran into the legendary ex Guns 'N Roses bassist outside the store when I realized I forgot my phone in my car, and we chatted about our home-- the greatest place on Earth: Seattle. We talked about how great it is that Griffey is back where he belongs, and where the Yankees can stick it. He was soon swarmed by other adoring fans, so I wandered off.

Loaded kicked off their 30 minute set with the title track off their new album Sick released April 7 on Century Media. As McKagan addressed the audience after the song, I'm proud to say he personally shouted me out (by name) as a fellow Seattleite. If anyone caught that on video, YouTube that shit and send me the link. The performace was full of energy, with Duff channeling Iggy Pop in his vocals. McKagan worked the crowd, constantly stepping offstage and into the crowd, making his guitar wail all the way through. "Seattle Head" was a crowd pleaser, infecting the audience with a foot-tapping or head-banging pandemic. Loaded unloaded their rock 'n roll riffs temporarily in exchange for the ballad "Wasted Heart," which was perfect for the intimate venue. The set concluded with an "off the cuff" jam session called "I Wanna Be Your Dog," shown in the video below. McKagan stepped back to allow Loaded's bassist Jeff Rouse (formerly of Vendetta Red, a band I saw live when I was about 14 or 15 in Seattle) take the mic, even giving guitarist Mike Squires a turn to cover AC/DC's "TNT" and "Wild Horses" by the Rolling Stones.

Set List:
01. Sick
02. Sleaze Factory
03. Flatline
04. Dark Days
05. Seattle Head
06. Wasted Heart
07. IOU
08. I Wanna Be Your Dog

Although there were no Guns 'N Roses covers, tomorrow night Loaded will perform at the Blender Theater at Grammercy, and according to Slash's Twitter, he's recording in NYC. Will Slash make an appearance at an old friend's show? I can only hope so because:
A) I'm going to be at the show
B) That would fucking rule if they jammed onstage

If I meet Slash Hudson I will piss my pants.

By the way, check out McKagan's awesome Mariner's sticker on his guitar:

Go M's!

Video Premiere: Marilyn Manson

Marilyn Manson - Arma-Goddamn-motherfuckin'-geddon

Marilyn Manson's "Arma-goddamn-motherfuckin-geddon" video makes me want to Arma-fucking-get-it-on. Not really, but that sounded cool. NME, a British rock mag premiered the video off of Manson's upcoming album The High End Of Low due out May 25 on Interscope but now it's available here for your viewing pleasure. The album will be Manson's seventh.

On March 27, Manson gave away the single "We're From America" off the album for free on his website.  "Arma-goddamn-motherfuckin-geddon" is equally as disappointing as "We're From America" which was hardly shocking, hateful, nor heavy (by Manson's standards). This video is definitely mild for the shock rocker, but at 40, it's expected. His make up is less garish, the glares have loss their evil sparkle, and the video sluts are hardly skanky. Oh and the track sucks too. Listening to it makes me want to Arma-get-on-with-it. Zingggg.

Attention Aspiring Rockstars!

Didn't make the drummer auditions for Smashing Pumpkins? Or maybe you just didn't want to work with that prick Billy Corgan. Either way, here's your chance to become a drummer for an awesome band with some cool dudes: Chiodos announced on their MySpace page that they are parting ways with their drummer of five years, Derrick Frost. The split was a mutual decision and was on good terms. The MySpace blog announcing the decision reads:

"After rocking together for nearly 5 years, we have decided to part ways with our drummer Derrick Frost. We've got nothing but love for the guy, we just feel it is the right move at this time as a band. Don't worry, there was no crazy drama or anything of the sort that needs everyone freaking out about. We are parting on good terms and are very thankful for the time and dedication the Derrick has given us and our fans over the past years. We send him our best wishes on whatever he pursues next and we know that you all will as well. We ask that you continue to support us as the bonded musicians that we still are as we continue to write new music and enjoy old tunes together. Because currently we are getting deep into writing a new record, and are beyond stoked to finish it up for all to hear!

See you on Warped Tour this summer! We are currently accepting submissions and holding tryouts for the drummer position of our band. If you are interested, please contact Bradley Bell @ Only serious inquiries, with touring history, PLEASE.

Edit: From Craig's Twitter -
"everyone keeps asking me why? we thought we were clear in the blog but here it is - this was a mutual thing - musical differences.""

First Listen: Portugal. The Man

Portugal. The Man's upcoming album The Satanic Satanist may be their best release to date. Due out July 21 on the band's on label Approaching AIRBalloons, I managed to catch a sneak preview with three tracks off the album:

01. People Say
02. Everyone Is Golden
03. Do You

The sound is a lot less dramatic than their usual singles, but rather more uplifting and almost Oasis-esque. John Gourley calls the new album a psychadelic infusion of his favorite artists like Pink Floyd, Mars Volta, and Led Zeppelin. Expect a lot more cheer and indie rock versusthe  experimental style they usually employ.

All three tracks have a larger than life sound that is perfect for the outdoor summer festival season that will be in full swing around the time of the album's release. Good thing the band has already been confirmed for Lollapalooza August 7-8 in Chicago, IL.

Mastodon Tries To Crack The Silver Screen

Drummer and lyricist Brann Dailor of Mastodon told in an article published early this morning that the metal band met with an unnamed film director and "wrote out a screenplay that reads from song to song. We didn't storyboard it, but we wrote a screenplay." Apparently, three directors are interested in putting the project into production.

"That's something that's cool about making concept records, that opportunity for more to be done, artistically. If you just had an album with a bunch of songs that didn't have anything to do with each other and there was no common thread, that aspect of the art wouldn't be there. But with [Crack the Skye], we have that possibility." Dailor said.

However, the key factor in making this movie a reality is financing the project.

Video Premeire: Chimaira

Chimaira's "Destroy And Dominate" off their new album The Infection released April 21.

Chimaira - Destroy And Dominate

Leaked: 21st Century Breakdown

Listen to six tracks off of Green Day's 21st Century Breakdown  here.

Track List:
01. 21st Century Breakdown
02. 21 Guns
03. American Eulogy
04. Before The Lobotomy
05. East Jesus Nowhere
06. Restless Heart

I'm really liking the track "21 Guns," it's slow, melodic, and shows the softer side of Green Day. In this make-love-not-war song, Billy Joe Armstrong even reaches a little for the high notes and nails it.

Reznor's Ringfinger Gets Some Use

Trent Reznor announced his engagement to Mariqueen Maandig the vocalist for the LA rock band West Indian Girl over the weekend, thus dispelling any rumours that he is in fact an android and devoid of emotion. The couple first came out to the public for the premiere of Start Trek, and the announcement was made on West Indian Girl website on May 2 reading:

"in case u havent heard the news, mariqueen got engaged. everyone in the west indian girl camp is super excited and happy for her. q’s an awesome person, friend and bandmate and she couldnt be marrying a cooler guy. talk about analog and digital love - their kids might all have moogs for arms."

Trent Reznor took to his Twitter today to say this:

"BTW, thank you all for the kind words regarding my (formerly) private life. Being happy feels funny. I like!"
